The $2.85 million P.S. 306/M.S. 331 Playground was designed through a student-led process that engaged elementary and middle school students in shaping a space that reflects their neighborhood’s identity, culture, and character. Guided by student input, the new playground includes a full basketball court, volleyball court, outdoor classroom, game tables, gazebo, age-appropriate play equipment for younger children, fitness equipment for older students and community members, shaded seating, a running track, and a multi-use turf field for soccer and football.
Formerly plagued by sinkholes and frequent flooding during rainstorms, the site was transformed into a resilient, high-performing landscape. The redesigned playground integrates green infrastructure elements—including shade trees, planted areas, permeable pavers, and a synthetic turf field—that collectively capture approximately 2 million gallons of stormwater annually. These strategies reduce runoff, alleviate pressure on the city’s sewer system, minimize combined sewer overflows, and help protect the Harlem River watershed.
The Playground was realized through a partnership with the NYC Department of Education, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, and the NYC School Construction Authority, with funding provided by Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, and Council Member Pierina Ana Sanchez.
